Fresh Coast 2009 a Success
The 3rd annual Fresh Coast Classic and it was a success in many ways: our 4-team, 2-day tournament ended with Clark Atlanta (Georgia) winning the championship by beating last year’s champs, Elizabeth City State University (North Carolina). David Brown (The 2010 FCC MVP) led the ECSU Vikings with 9 points in the championship game, hitting the game winning shot. The consolation game was won by Lincoln University (Missouri) who defeated Claflin University (South Carolina). Clark Atlanta will return this year to defend their new title. All games were very exciting with the outcomes decided only in the last minute of all 4 games. But even more important were the final results of the college fair. We had 437 attendees throughout the day and over 40 colleges and related organizations sent representatives or otherwise participated. All day, the large banquet room felt vibrant as local high school students, parents and other interested parties took advantage of the 20 education and career oriented presentations. It was refreshing and inspiring to see so many of Milwaukee’s youth taking an active interest higher education.During the half-time show of the final game we honored 10 MPS students by presenting each with a scholarships based on their academic achievements and overall good standing.ELIZABETH CITY VIKINGS CAPTURE 2008 FRESH COAST CLASSIC WITH A 68-65 WIN OVER MOREHOUSE COLLEGE
Hilliard Scores Season High 33 Points; Named Tournament MVP
November 29, 2008
WILWAUKEE, WI - The Elizabeth City State Vikings captured the 2008 Fresh Coast Classic Tournament with a 68-65 win over Morehouse College Saturday afternoon at the US Cellular Arena.
The Vikings are now off to their best start (5-0) in Shawn Walker's tenure at ECSU. The Vikings will receive an automatic invitation to next year's event as the defending champions.
En route to MVP honors Anthony Hilliard collected his 41st career double-double with a season high 33 points and 12 rebounds. Down the stretch of regulation a stifling Viking defense forced Morehouse into five turnovers over their last nine possessions. After a three-pointer by Rico Gray made the score 65-61 at the 5:49 mark, the Tigers went cold from the floor. The Vikings closed the game on a 7-0 run, while coupled with their turnovers in the waning minutes the Tigers (2-1) missed their final four shots at the rim.
Lawrence Diamond finished with a team high 21 points while Kenny Boyd added a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.
DeJuan Morrison was the only other Viking in double figures with 13 points. ECSU will return home on Tuesday, December 2 when they host Chowan University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm at the RL Vaughan Center. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
